HISTORY

The history of the University of Buenos Aires is deeply connected to the history of Argentina. Its founding in 1821 not casually coincided with a time of great revolutionary and independence movements, during which those pioneering and visionary generations established a principle that still guides the university today: there is no development without knowledge. Since then, the transformative milestones that shaped its identity have stressed UBA’s significance in the country’s intellectual, scientific, social, and political life.

As a stage for the country’s most emblematic events, UBA has often anticipated and fostered its most innovative and creative tendencies, while also serving as a counterweight during turbulent and obscure political and institutional times. Its governing structure, based on autonomy and co-governance, has been a vanguard model for the region since the university reform movement. The principle of free tuition, established in the mid-20th century, and unrestricted access made higher education widely accessible without sacrificing quality or excellence, demonstrating that it is possible to build a dynamic and inclusive society. The greatness of the University of Buenos Aires is ultimately rooted in the values that distinguish it and that it inspires: freedom of thought, critical spirit, and social commitment. UBA is academic excellence and international prestige, and for more than two centuries it has educated generations in the service of the nation. https://muba.uba.ar/
